Aa Advice – Leading Worship Solo

Every now and then, I get invitations to lead worship at other churches. In accepting those invites, I realize that I may have to sing solo…meaning no praise team/worship team or background vocalists.  There are a few things that I keep in mind when I have to lead worship solo.

Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit –  No matter what you plan, it will fail without direction of the Holy Spirit.

Communicate – If this is your first time visiting the church, you need to get information about the congregation.  I believe that this makes a huge difference.  Find out about their demographics, what type of music they are used to in their church (Contemporary Christian, Black Gospel, Hymns, etc).

Choose songs carefully – The thing that helps me the most is that I try and choose songs that are familiar to the audience.  If  the audience is singing, then you can at least ad lib a few times during the song.  However, you can’t count on the audience being involved all of the time.  You just never know what is going happen.  You can only pray for the best outcome!

Practice – You have to practice on your own in general, but especially if you are used to doing lots of ad libs throughout your worship set.  Take time to rehearse singing each song as if it were a solo.  You may be surprised how you will try to lead a song in, and there are no singers there to back you up. Practice as if there will be no additional vocal assistance.

These are the things that help me. How do you prepare to lead solo worship sets?  Let me know in the comment section below.

Thanks Contenders Church

As always, I enjoyed worshipping with the Contenders Church Family.  This past Sunday, I served as a guest worship leader.  I have to admit that this time I was even more excited because I had a chance to work with live musicians.  We sing with tracks at my home church so this was a treat for me.  The hospitality is on point at this church and it was a pleasure to be there.  Thanks, Contenders for a wonderful time!

Contenders has a commercial that describes what their church is about.  Check it out and if you are in the Atlanta area, pay them a visit.  You’ll enjoy it.

Something New – Korean BBQ Chicken

korean bbq chicken

As of today, I decided to challenge myself to do something new or different everyday for the next 30 days.

On day 1, I decided to split this delicious dish (Korean BBQ Chicken Stir-Fry) with my husband. We like P.F Chang’s and usually order the same food.  But this time, I saw the above dish on their seasonal menu and I am so glad that we ordered it.  It was very flavorful, sweet and spicy and all around a good entree.

Gospel at the Oscars

Last night as I listened to the Oscars, I found myself running into the other room when I heard someone boldly singing “His Eye is on the Sparrow”. I admit, I didn’t recognize the lady (Darlene Love) singing the song. But, I smiled because that particular song was on her heart to sing in front of millions of viewers. She used her few seconds in front of the camera to acknowledge the fact that God watches over her.

As Christians, we are to be lights shining in a world of darkness. We are to glorify God in all that we do. How are you using your platform? How will you use your few seconds of fame?

Darlene Love accepted the Oscar award for 20 Feet from Stardom – Best Documentary Feature. Watch below.

A Roadblocks Remix

This is a video of me singing my song, Roadblocks.  Last winter, I had jam session with two musicians that work with.  I started singing Roadblocks and this video is the end result.  A bit of a different flavor than the original, but I like it!
